Council tables lake rules; sets public meeting for Monday

By Tracy R. Mesler

After more than 40 minutes discussion, and explanation, the Nocona City Council tabled adoption of new rules and regulations for Lake Nocona to allow for a public hearing next Monday, Jan. 20.

The city took possession of lake Nocona on Dec. 31, 2019, which also meant the end to the rules the North Montague County Water Supply District has used since 1960.

The most controversial proposal in the new rules was assessing fees for launching boats into Lake Nocona; have a dock or walkway extending into the lake; and for hosting a fishing tournament on the lake.

Councilman Robert Fuller took the lead in explaining what the city was proposing to do, and why – to generate funds to make improvements to the lake and to address inspection issues with the lake’s dam.

Fuller said his long-term goal is to construct concrete restrooms at each of the three parks, “which can serve as storm shelters.

A public forum will be held Monday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m. at the H.J. Justin Building to discuss the proposed rules. City Manager Lynn Henley said a revised set of proposed rules would be released to social media later this week.

I own a lake house and dock. I’m happy to pay a fee, and would feel like it is fairer to pay $150 and not have to also pay the annual $35/boat fee. The $200 for a fishing tournament is very fair. The fishing has gotten worse and added pressure by 25-50 tournament boats each week is hurting the fishery.
