DA’s race contested as 2020 campaign in full swing

By Tracy R. Mesler

Officially, the 2020 state and local elections season opens on Saturday, Nov. 9, which is the first day candidates for county, district and state offices may file their declaration of intent to run for office.

But just like the national elections, there is an ‘early season’, and Monday Henrietta attorney William Knowlton announced his candidacy for the 97th District Attorney challenging freshman DA Casey Polhemus of Bowie for the post.

All candidates for public office in Texas must first designate a campaign treasurer. As there is no “opening” date for such declaration, many candidates name their treasurers early letting the public know they intend to seek office.

Candidates for county, district, and state offices have until 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, to pay their filing fees for a place on the Tuesday, March 3, Republican or Democratic Primary Ballot and thus seek a place in the November 2020 General Election ballot.
